Child abuse cases are traumatic and need to be dealt with sensitively and thoroughly in order to achieve the best possible result for the client.
During this seminar barrister Stephen Glynn will give an overview of child abuse law and provide an update on the recent changes in the law. He will talk about the process of bringing a claim in such a case, focusing on best practice and providing clear practical advice.
Social care expert Maria Ruegger will talk about her role of providing independent expert evidence in child abuse cases. Drawing on her many years' experience of complex childcare matters she will discuss her role in recent cases, including the recent high profile case of NXS v Camden.
The speakers:
Maria Ruegger is a Consultant Guardian in the department of psychological medicine at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She is also a social work consultant and independent social worker and trainer. She regularly acts as an expert witness in child protection, negligence and related matters and is commissioned to give advice on complex childcare matters, both within and outside of court proceedings. Maria has taught on both qualifying and post-qualifying courses in social work and is on the approved list of practice assessors for students undertaking advanced qualifications in social work. She lectures, writes and has undertaken research in child protection and related matters.
Stephen Glynn is a barrister at 9 Gough Square. He specialises in the practice of personal injury, clinical negligence and professional negligence. He is very familiar with catastrophic injury claims and their associated complexities. he is a member of APIL, the Personal Injury Bar Association and the Professional Negligence Bar Association and is recognised as a leading junior in the Legal 500.
